Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri has been killed in a CIA drone strike in Afghanistan, U.S. officers advised Reuters on Monday, the most important blow to the militant group since its founder Osama bin Laden was killed in 2011.

One of many officers, talking on the situation of anonymity, stated a drone strike was carried out by the CIA within the Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday.

In an announcement, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed {that a} strike passed off and strongly condemned it, calling it a violation of “worldwide rules.”

U.S. President Joe Biden will ship remarks on Monday at 7:30 p.m. (2330 GMT) on what the White Home described as a “profitable counter-terrorism operation.”
